An Evening Under the Stars

Maddie and RileyJune 1, 2013

Within 15 minutes of meeting Maddie, I knew it was my sole mission to make sure that I figured out a way to get these beautiful star lanterns she had purchased hung for her wedding reception. I also learned that she was super organized and had an amazing vision for her wedding.

After their many travels (domestic and abroad), Maddie and Riley chose Jackson Hole as the location for their wedding and Shooting Star for its casual, rustic, relaxed atmosphere. It turned out to be the most beautiful spring day in the Tetons. The sky was blue, the sun was warm and the breeze was pleasant.

Maddie and her bridesmaids started their day getting ready at Frost Salon while Riley and his groomsmen got ready at his parents house. While getting ready, Maddie read a letter Riley wrote to her saying "I cannot put in to words how excited I am to see you." In return she wrote him a letter he read saying "I love you more deeply than I knew was possible." What an amazing and thoughtful way to start your wedding day!

The ceremony began with Maddie and her dad walking out of the beautiful doors of the Alpine Barn, being welcomed by friends, family and her husband to be. The I do's were said and Maddie and Riley went off to Snake River Ranch to capture the sunset and each other in all their glory. Meanwhile, guests enjoyed food and drinks out on the lawn looking at the beautiful Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Dinner and toasts ensued including a wonderful welcome speech from Riley and Maddie, a tear-jerker from Maddie's parents and a surprise slide show from Riley's brother and best man.

The night continued with dancing and a very special 65th wedding anniversary dance for Maddie's grandparents. It was beautiful!! The stars hanging from the ceiling twinkled as the night got darker and darker and the dancing began. It looked like a perfect night sky over the dance floor. You can't have a night under the stars without milk and cookies!!

And to finish it all off, guests sent them out in style to their mini cooper with sparklers. It was a sparkling end to a sparkling evening under the stars.

Lisa and Jesse, July 7, 2012 People start to plan their weddings at various increments before the big day. It is rare for people to book vendors more than a year in advance. It is also rare for it to the first time in Jackson Hole for 99% of the people at the wedding. Both of these were the case with Lisa and Jesse's wedding.

In June 2011, I received an email from a gal in New York City who wanted to get married in Jackson Hole in 2012.  Her fiancé had visited Jackson Hole when he was 14 years old, they love outdoor activities wanted a destination wedding.  A week later we met on the phone for the preliminary meeting. To my surprise she already had a handful of her vendors booked and narrowed her venues down to two choices. She booked with Events, Etc. a few days later and we were in contact throughout the year until I met her on Monday, July 2, 2012. Little did I know back in June 2011 of the fun, excitement and celebration I was signing up for through the next year.

So for the next year I would check in with Lisa via email to see how her planning was coming. We had the standard three-month out meeting and final walk through when she arrived to town. She asked all the questions you ask if you were planning a wedding in a location you had never visited: How far is it from town to Jackson Hole Golf and Tennis Club? Can you recommend a photographer? Can you recommend a florist? Where is the best place to eat in town?

Lisa’s emails were always thorough. No detail was over looked. Her wedding day timeline was down to what happened at 5:10pm, she had photos of how to set up the décor, spreadsheets for what decor the florist would supply and what décor she would supply, a schedule for the week of the wedding and more. She went on Etsy to find decor to personalize the wedding and what she could not find online she made herself.  She was not being a micro-manager, instead she was being detail oriented and a planner- two things that make a bride wonderful to work with.

Finally the big day arrived, July 7, 2012. I arrived at Jackson Hole Golf and Tennis Club that morning and my assistant and I immediately got to work setting up all of Lisa’s Etsy and DIY décor. It was all very personal, thoughtful and tasteful. The items she made herself were professional looking.  All of the items were thoughtful and hand-picked, down to the lace from her mother’s veil wrapped around the stems in her bouquet.  The wedding day flowed perfectly in synch with the timelines, spreadsheets and photos Lisa created. It even rained after the party moved from the patio to the tent, as if she had planned it that way.

I pretty much always shed a few tears when my brides walk down the aisle. However it is rare for me to shed tears, during the toasts, first dance and mother-daughter dance (that is not a type-o, there was a touching dance with the mother and bride, a true testament to their bond). I don’t think I have ever had to try so hard to keep it together at a client’s wedding.

This wedding was truly not just a day of love, but love filled the whole day, down to every last detail.

Giddy Up!

Lindsey Nickel

cimg8576.jpg

About two years ago Kim from Mill Iron Ranch invited me down for a site visit. I never made it down there back then, you know how summer passes so quickly. So I was super excited when she gave me a call after reading about my blog launch and not only invited back for a site visit, but also invited me to join a group for a horseback ride. Giddy up, I love horseback riding! I was literally counting down the days until I got to spend time working by horseback riding, since most days I spend siting at my desk. To make the situation even better it was on a Monday morning. What better way to start the week than on a horseback ride through the Bridger Teton National Forest? Mill Iron Ranch is located in Hoback Junction, which is about 20 minutes from the town of Jackson Hole, so it was a quick and easy drive. For years I had seen their sign on the highway up to Jackson Hole, so I am confident that any tourist can find the ranch. I followed the signs to the ranch, got checked in and met my horse.

Sadee was our guide. She is a legit cowgirl rock star. When I asked how long she has lived in Jackson Hole she said "I was born and raised on this ranch." Wow, it is not everyday, or even every year that you meet someone born and raised in Jackson Hole. She is on the professional rodeo circuit, in her spare time she participates in the Jackson Hole Rodeo and also works on the family ranch leading trail rides. Plus the Mill Iron Ranch has been in her family for four generations. It was clear immediately that this trail ride was not her first rodeo. She talked to everyone, was full of information about the area and genuinely enjoyed being out with horses and people. I could go on and on about how gorgeous the scenery was, that we didn't see any other people buildings or sign of civilization or how the horses comically kept farting, but instead you can look at these photos.

About two hours later we were back at the barn. I tipped Sadee (local's tip: pretty much all Jackson-ites work on tips) and headed up to the lodge to meet Kim and learn about the event options. The lodge is a large room decorated with authentic western items, a stage and a bar in its own corral. Kim showed me where they cook their tasty steaks (my boyfriend claims they are the best in town) in an open kitchen, the stage and lawn for wedding ceremonies. Since they are not located in the town, there is not a 10:00pm curfew, like other locations. The prices are certainly competitive so this is an option for many types of wedding budgets. I can imagine a group using this facility for a trail ride and then rehearsal dinner or a wedding with a western touch and dancing all night long.

As I drove home from the Mill Iron Ranch with dust in my hair, I thought about how hungry I was from the morning ride and how unique it is to find a ranch that has been in the same family for generations. For a two hours got to feel like a cowgirl.
