3 best tips for planning a Jackson Hole Wedding

Lindsey Nickel

Congratulations, you're getting married! Jackson Hole quickly became one of the most popular destination wedding locations thanks to the stunning Teton mountain range, endless outdoor recreation and western atmosphere. Summer weddings are starting in a few months, so be sure that you have thought of everything. Since Jackson Hole is such a unique part of the country, it has some unique things to remember when planning a Jackson Hole wedding.

1. Have a rain plan

The rain comes in every day like clockwork, well a slightly broken clock. Typically, on a beautiful sunny day there is an afternoon thundershower for about 20 minutes. After this, the clouds clear and the sky is sunny again. It is possible that the clouds stay all day and it is too wet to get married outside. Be sure to have a Plan B if the weather is too wet and cold for an outdoor ceremony.

2. Hire a wedding planner

It's never too late to hire someone to help you out. The last three to six months is when a lot of the details get ironed out. During this time, your wedding planner can put together a timeline for the day so that nothing is overlooked, liaison with your vendors so that they have everything needed for the wedding day (did you know that the musicians need chairs provided for them?). On the wedding day, your wedding planner will be an extension of you, making sure everything is set up and ready to go as if you were doing it yourself. Your planner will greet vendors and make sure they all know what's happening, how and when so that the vendors don't come to you with question. With the help of an experienced wedding planner, you will spend your wedding day enjoying champagne and celebrating!

3. Be prepared for nature

There are two things that I see guests unprepared for year after year in Jackson Hole: bugs and sun. Mosquitoes love sunset and the calm hot days that are perfect for wedding ceremonies. Few things are more uncomfortable for guests than trying to sit still during the ceremony or dinner while mosquitoes munch on their legs. The sun is also far more intense at the Jackson Hole elevation of 6,200 feet than visitors expect. Help guests to enjoy your wedding day by providing bug repellent and sunscreen. You can place these in bathrooms or at a welcome table so that people can easily find them.

Natalie and Brad's Classic and Timeless Wedding

Lindsey Nickel

Natalie and Brad will always stand out as a wedding we loved and will never forget. They are a very sweet couple who loves the outdoors and adventures. Skiing is one of their favorite activities. When they first started dating they would book ski trips on Friday to the newest snow for the weekend and off they went. The ski town of Jackson Hole was the perfect fit for their summer wedding and Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis Club was the perfect venue. The cloudy day didn't stop this wedding from being beautiful and tons of fun! From the arch, to the garlands, to the antler wedding logo, no detail was overlooked. Natalie and Brad recently welcomed a baby boy into their adventures as well!

Maggie and AndyJuly 20, 2013

After my first phone call with Maggie and Andy, I knew this was going to be a fun wedding!! They had met miraculously on-line and fell instantly for each other. In the time since they met they hosted dinner parties, traveled the world, ate pounds and pounds of sushi and fine cheeses, and attended friends' beautiful weddings. With all this under their belt, it was time for them to throw a wedding of their own. They wanted a James Bond feel with a vintage, elegant, artistic flair. Could we make this happen in Jackson Hole...Of course!! Maggie and Andy specifically wanted lots of good music and especially good food (minus cake...they both hate cake). Maggie being an art teacher used her artistic talents to create fun, locally inspired welcome bags for all their guests and made cute horse shoe favors for all the guests at the reception. The week boasted of a welcome dinner at the Four Seasons, wedding party white water rafting trip, rehearsal dinner at the Kitchen, and reception at Jackson Hole Golf and Tennis. This wedding would not have been complete without a western inspired photo booth, exquisite wine, and tactical Oscar style spoofing of both their brother's during their toasts. After an amazing dinner, the DJ turned it up and the dancing began (props included) and it only stopped because they hit the venue curfew. I think they would have danced the night away had they been allowed!! Both bride and groom wanted to show their closest friends and family a good time in Jackson Hole and their goal was accomplished!!

Their elegant yet adventurous wedding week would not be complete without a dream escape and honeymoon in Santorini, the Amalfi Coast, and Venice.

Congratulations Maggie and Andy!! Best wishes and thank you for letting us help coordinate your amazing wedding!!

Alexa and JakeJuly 28, 2012

Lovely, that is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Alexa and Jake’s wedding at Jackson Hole Golf and Tennis and ceremony at St. John’s Episcopal Church. Everything was lovely. First off, Alexa is a young and joyous lady, you just feel cheerful being around her. She probably got that from her mom, whose primary goals for the day were not to be stressed out and to start dancing as soon as possible.  Alexa’s dress was lovely. Alexa and Jake are the cutest head-over-heels in love young couple and they were so lovely they looked like they belong  in J.Crew’s wedding catalog. The tent was romantically decorated in soft neutrals with lots of candles. It was lovely.

I must admit, I was in disbelief and a bit worried when every time I check in with them they said “Everything is great.” Nothing more, nothing less always “Everything is great.” How can everything always be great? Well it can.  The whole wedding day can be great, even perfect. The day can be everything the bride wants and more (Alexa told me that is how she the day was for her via text the next morning). Perhaps the secret to lovely is to be carefree, and have a "love is in the air" attitude. Lovely.

Lisa and Jesse, July 7, 2012 People start to plan their weddings at various increments before the big day. It is rare for people to book vendors more than a year in advance. It is also rare for it to the first time in Jackson Hole for 99% of the people at the wedding. Both of these were the case with Lisa and Jesse's wedding.

In June 2011, I received an email from a gal in New York City who wanted to get married in Jackson Hole in 2012.  Her fiancé had visited Jackson Hole when he was 14 years old, they love outdoor activities wanted a destination wedding.  A week later we met on the phone for the preliminary meeting. To my surprise she already had a handful of her vendors booked and narrowed her venues down to two choices. She booked with Events, Etc. a few days later and we were in contact throughout the year until I met her on Monday, July 2, 2012. Little did I know back in June 2011 of the fun, excitement and celebration I was signing up for through the next year.

So for the next year I would check in with Lisa via email to see how her planning was coming. We had the standard three-month out meeting and final walk through when she arrived to town. She asked all the questions you ask if you were planning a wedding in a location you had never visited: How far is it from town to Jackson Hole Golf and Tennis Club? Can you recommend a photographer? Can you recommend a florist? Where is the best place to eat in town?

Lisa’s emails were always thorough. No detail was over looked. Her wedding day timeline was down to what happened at 5:10pm, she had photos of how to set up the décor, spreadsheets for what decor the florist would supply and what décor she would supply, a schedule for the week of the wedding and more. She went on Etsy to find decor to personalize the wedding and what she could not find online she made herself.  She was not being a micro-manager, instead she was being detail oriented and a planner- two things that make a bride wonderful to work with.

Finally the big day arrived, July 7, 2012. I arrived at Jackson Hole Golf and Tennis Club that morning and my assistant and I immediately got to work setting up all of Lisa’s Etsy and DIY décor. It was all very personal, thoughtful and tasteful. The items she made herself were professional looking.  All of the items were thoughtful and hand-picked, down to the lace from her mother’s veil wrapped around the stems in her bouquet.  The wedding day flowed perfectly in synch with the timelines, spreadsheets and photos Lisa created. It even rained after the party moved from the patio to the tent, as if she had planned it that way.

I pretty much always shed a few tears when my brides walk down the aisle. However it is rare for me to shed tears, during the toasts, first dance and mother-daughter dance (that is not a type-o, there was a touching dance with the mother and bride, a true testament to their bond). I don’t think I have ever had to try so hard to keep it together at a client’s wedding.

This wedding was truly not just a day of love, but love filled the whole day, down to every last detail.
